Success! Our Best Spring Carnival ever!

2016 Spring Carnival Broadview Coop Preschool

Our Annual Spring Carnival funds scholarships for families in need to attend Broadview CoOp Preschool, and this year was our best year to date in fundraising. We have so many people to thank, starting with our fabulous volunteer team who organized the carnival itself: Jennifer, Laura, Ashley and Trisha. Thank you parents for all your work in making our carnival the best yet!

Our silent auction and raffle were particularly amazing this year, with items from local businesses and families that were fun and exciting. Everything from food gift certificates, to sports games to summer time activities, we had it all. Thank you for everyone who won their items – we hope you enjoy them!

Thank you to all these amazing local sponsors and families who helped make the carnival great!

The Seattle Biscuit Truck had a line as long as the carnival itself, and everyone enjoyed delicious biscuit sandwiches. The food was delicious! We are appreciative you came to support the Broadview community! The music was also fun and lively. Thank you for delighting us all with great sounds (even the littles joined in for a bit.)

What does free choice time look like for our 3-5’s class?

If you are new to a cooperative preschool, you may not know the daily curriculum. While we do circle time, outside play time and snack or lunch, our 3-5’s class has a large and exciting “free choice” activity that the kids love. This is really the part where the kids can explore, play and learn. The class is divided up into sections, and each section has a specific area of focus. There is always the home area with cooking, building, dress up and grocery shopping available. Another is the library with books and a cozy couch. However, the real fun are the activities Teacher Erin sets up.

Today we had in the art section, a place for the children to tell a story to the adult who writes it down. We had inspiration of animal toys set up for them to touch and see and hold. Then, after the story has been written down, the child can draw and illustrate their story. It’s a favorite area for sure. As a co-op parent, I love getting these stories back and hearing about the tales my child comes up with.

The blocks area is often busy, with creative imaginations building and sorting and cooperating amongst themselves. Sometimes they have a plan, sometimes it’s just building. Here they built a very sturdy police department building, and a tower.

In the science area, we were planting seeds in cups. I think they are flower seeds, and we have wonderful windows with lots of light we set them up high so the kids can watch their plants grow.

In the math area the children are counting and sorting beans and seeds and gluing them to paper. They can make art, or sort and count, or both.

Today in our gross motor activity area we had roller skates! It is a big activity and the kids have to take turns. You can see the waitlist where the older children have written down their own names. When one student is done skating, the next name on the wait list is called.

And last, this very fun and tactile table is set up with a pink slime Teacher Erin made. The kids are having great fun touching it and watching it ooze, hang and stretch.

Our teachers work very hard to set up activities that children of all abilities will want to participate in, play with and learn from. We hope you have enjoyed learning a little more about what happens at cooperative preschool!

Join our Pre3 Class for Winter Quarter!

We have availability this Winter for our 2015-2016 NSC cooperative preschool in our Pre 3 class!

Pre 3 Class meets Tuesday and Friday 9:30-11:30
(Child is age 2 by August 31)

At Broadview, you will participate in your child’s education and development under the guidance and care of a trained teacher as well as a parent educator from North Seattle College. The co-op is owned and run through the parents, and you will have a voice in the policy and procedures of your school. Parents will work one day a week in the class, and attend monthly education sessions with the parent educator. This monthly parent meeting is what parents value most, year after year. It provides an excellent resource for community and education.

Teacher Charlotte has over 19 years experience providing a nurturing, healthy environment for children and parents to grow and learn through play based, experiential learning. Our program focuses on helping children (and parents) develop independence and foster self esteem.

Our location provides an excellent outdoor play area for exploration and movement. If you are interested please check us out online or contact one of our parent coordinators! We would love to have you join our community!

There is still time to join in our class for the start of Winter Quarter, and we welcome you into our community of families at Broadview Co-Op!

You can contact our Parent Coordinator Amy to answer questions and help you register for this Winter.

Welcoming Teacher Erin for the 3-5’s class of 2015-2016!

Teacher Erin

Erin has a passion for co-op because of the supportive community that it provides kids and families.  She is an experienced and certified teacher and comes to us with many years as a co-op parent herself.  Erin is great with kids and has many strengths that she’s eager to share with our co-op community, starting September 2015.

Erin has a Bachelor of Science degree from UW in Urban Forestry (with a specialty in Environmental Education) and a Masters in Teaching from UW.  She’s a WA State certified teacher with endorsements in Elementary Education and Special Education.  Erin taught 1st and 2nd grades in Highline School District, has worked closely with Kindergarten classes, and has experience working with ELL and students with Special Needs. Erin’s also been a Lead Naturalist through Seattle Parks where she taught Environmental Education to Preschool-Grade 5 kids.

Erin went to co-op preschool herself as a kid and, more recently, has 6 years experience accompanying her two daughters through North Seattle College Co-ops, (including Broadview 3-5 with her younger daughter).

Erin believes that “Teaching is creating experiences for students to construct meaning.”  Erin loves helping kids learn through discovery.  She provides opportunities for kids to explore, create, discover and reason.  She creates explorations in literacy, math, science, art, gross motor and more.  Play provides the learning that preschoolers need to discover their world and learn to interact in a social setting. These experiences help kids construct meaning and gain the skills they need in preschool and beyond.

Erin lives in Seattle with her husband and two daughters. She enjoys spending time with her family, exploring the outdoors, walks with friends, riding bikes, gardening, sewing and reading.  She is thrilled to be working with the families at Broadview Co-op Preschool.

Broadview 3-5’s class last days of the year

The 3-5’s Broadview Co-Op Preschool class had a wonderful year! We thoroughly enjoyed our Teacher Ricci, our Parent Educator Jean, and our wonderful community of families. Life long memories and friendships were built, and here are a few photos to share.

The class explored Carkeek Park, the beach waterfront near low tide. It was a pretty awesome hands on adventure, giving children the chance to learn through all their senses. We are so lucky to be able to take advantage of nearby wild life. The rocks provided new and exciting experiences for both kids and adults alike.

The very last day, a few of our students collaborated to build a very detailed Zoo. They worked together and really enjoyed the experience of creation and working as a team. They included a pond for the hippos, a desert for the camels, and a nap area for the giraffes too, incase they were sleepy. It was truly inspiring to watch them group animal families together, and provide for the animals specific needs. It was a wonderful way to end our truly awesome year at Broadview Co-Op!

One of the great things about joining a co-op preschool is the parent education. As you participate in class, you will also meet with a trained parent educator once a month. The parent education is fantastic, and covers topics appropriate for not just the current events within the children’s class, but also skills your children (and you as a parent!) can use and learn to improve family function. Each class has it’s own parent educator who will attend preschool to get to know the students (your children) and be available for questions you may have both about school or about parenting in general. Parents find them a great resource for everything from cooperation, potty training, sleep issues and more. A fantastic reason to love co-op!

Our Parent Educators for Toddlers and Pre3s:

Emily Bradley has been working with North Seattle College in Parent Education for the past two years.  Emily has a background in Developmental Psychology and Parent Education.  Formerly, she worked in the greater Southern California area for Kaiser Permanent doing workshops for parents and little ones around a variety of health related issues.  Emily also worked as a Cognitive Behavioral Training Specialist, helping families of children with special needs in the North Seattle area.  She believes in supporting parents and caregivers on their individual journeys and helping build community and common ground between families as we all work to raise our children in this modern village. Emily is the mama of three and a half year old twin boys.

Mika McAfee mika has been working with families and children in a variety of settings for over 20 years.  Prior to becoming a Parent Educator, Mika worked as a School Counselor and Mental Health Specialist in Seattle, Edmonds and Everett schools.  While participating in cooperative preschools with her own children, she was recruited as an Instructor and has been working with parents ever since.  She has an M.A.Ed. in Counseling and received additional training in Child/Human Development, Narrative Therapy and Restorative Family Conferencing.  Her educational and work experience is complemented by her role as mother of three and stepmother of one.   In her spare time Mika enjoys reading, exploring the outdoors, music and travelling with her family.

Fall Harvest Social!

The start of the school year quickly fades from summer to fall, and at Broadview we are enjoying the change in season. We don’t let a little rain get in our way of playing outdoors.

Broadview Co Op Preschool Seattle

Stories and classroom play focus on the natural world around us, and involve children in learning through story and song.

Teacher Ricci Broadview CoOp Preschool

Teachers Charlotte and Teacher Ricci do their best in all three classes to let discovery and learning happen organically. Below in the 3-5’s group students are learning from flowers picked and brought indoors from Teacher Ricci’s own yard.

We will be celebrating our wonderful preschool at the Fall Harvest Social. All families of students are invited to attend. Come celebrate the season at Broadview Co-Op Preschool.
