Broadview 3-5’s class last days of the year

The 3-5’s Broadview Co-Op Preschool class had a wonderful year! We thoroughly enjoyed our Teacher Ricci, our Parent Educator Jean, and our wonderful community of families. Life long memories and friendships were built, and here are a few photos to share.

The class explored Carkeek Park, the beach waterfront near low tide. It was a pretty awesome hands on adventure, giving children the chance to learn through all their senses. We are so lucky to be able to take advantage of nearby wild life. The rocks provided new and exciting experiences for both kids and adults alike.

The very last day, a few of our students collaborated to build a very detailed Zoo. They worked together and really enjoyed the experience of creation and working as a team. They included a pond for the hippos, a desert for the camels, and a nap area for the giraffes too, incase they were sleepy. It was truly inspiring to watch them group animal families together, and provide for the animals specific needs. It was a wonderful way to end our truly awesome year at Broadview Co-Op!

One of the great things about joining a co-op preschool is the parent education. As you participate in class, you will also meet with a trained parent educator once a month. The parent education is fantastic, and covers topics appropriate for not just the current events within the children’s class, but also skills your children (and you as a parent!) can use and learn to improve family function. Each class has it’s own parent educator who will attend preschool to get to know the students (your children) and be available for questions you may have both about school or about parenting in general. Parents find them a great resource for everything from cooperation, potty training, sleep issues and more. A fantastic reason to love co-op!

Our Parent Educators for Toddlers and Pre3s:

Emily Bradley has been working with North Seattle College in Parent Education for the past two years.  Emily has a background in Developmental Psychology and Parent Education.  Formerly, she worked in the greater Southern California area for Kaiser Permanent doing workshops for parents and little ones around a variety of health related issues.  Emily also worked as a Cognitive Behavioral Training Specialist, helping families of children with special needs in the North Seattle area.  She believes in supporting parents and caregivers on their individual journeys and helping build community and common ground between families as we all work to raise our children in this modern village. Emily is the mama of three and a half year old twin boys.

Mika McAfee mika has been working with families and children in a variety of settings for over 20 years.  Prior to becoming a Parent Educator, Mika worked as a School Counselor and Mental Health Specialist in Seattle, Edmonds and Everett schools.  While participating in cooperative preschools with her own children, she was recruited as an Instructor and has been working with parents ever since.  She has an M.A.Ed. in Counseling and received additional training in Child/Human Development, Narrative Therapy and Restorative Family Conferencing.  Her educational and work experience is complemented by her role as mother of three and stepmother of one.   In her spare time Mika enjoys reading, exploring the outdoors, music and travelling with her family.

What’s Co-op?
A Cooperative Preschool, or Co-op, provides quality, early childhood education and parent support for families with children from infancy to Pre-Kindergarten.

Co-ops offer a community of support and education for children and their families. They differ from traditional preschools in that they’re lead by an experienced preschool teacher in conjunction with parents, and in partnership with certified Parent Educators from North Seattle College.

Broadview Co-op Preschool offers engaging early learning opportunities, accredited parent education, and family support for families in Broadview and beyond.

Broadview Co-op Preschool: Meet our Teachers!

Charlotte Wallstrom, fondly known to students and parents alike as Teacher Charlotte, has taught at Broadview Co-op Preschool for 14-plus years.  Teacher Charlotte has worked with preschoolers since the mid-1970s. Her now-grown children attended co-op preschool, starting her love for how co-op supports children and families.

With a master’s degree in education, including an emphasis on special education and early childhood education,Teacher Charlotte brings knowledge, experience and positive energy to the classroom. Charlotte is passionate about children’s growth and paraphrases Will Rogers with her own line, “I never met a child I didn’t like.”

Charlotte teaches Broadview Co-op’s Toddler and Pre-3 programs, along with her beloved classroom mascot, Mr. Moo.

Ricci Kilmer has a deep passion for education and believes in children’s natural instincts to explore and discover. Nature is a common theme in her classroom.  Children engage through art, hands-on discovery, social interaction and play, early literacy and math activities, all while developing skills they’ll need as they move toward kindergarten.

With a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics Education and a teaching certificate in mathematics and Elementaryeducation, Ricci has taught preschool through 2nd grade, written curriculum for summer camps, and is always learning alongside her students. She’s fluent in Spanish, loves sharing music, art, and world culture, and is a great fan of co-op education herself, as she participated in NSCC’s co-ops with her own two sons.

Ricci teaches Broadview Co-op’s 3-5 and Pre-K programs.
